COOLfeature : TOPLESS FRENCH |
|
The French are well known for their flair in fashion and styles and when it comes to four wheels, they’ve proved that they are able to apply the same panache to the design of their cars.
Founded in 1899 by three brothers, Louis, Fernand and Marcel Renault, and together with two friends, Renault’s first car was the Renault Voiturette 1CV, and thereafter started racing in city to city races in nearby Switzerland which gave them instant success as a car manufacturer. Unfortunately, Marcel was killed in an accident during a Paris to Madrid race in 1903 which also made Louis give up racing entirely too, concentrating more on the company’s business aspects. Other than cars, Renault also manufactured taxis, buses as well as commercial vehicles used for transporting cargo, and when World War I arrived, they also manufactured ammunition, military planes as well as vehicles; there was even a Renault tank which was known as the FT-17. During the Second World War, Louis refused to build cars for Nazi Germany and was thus arrested and put into prison where he sadly passed away with some suspicion that he was murdered instead.
