MORE IMPROVMENTS
What is new about the Ninja Racing V2 Capsule Filter? Ninja V2 is still based on the premise of improving air pressure in the air intake. This improved version not only enhances on the capsule design, it also introduces an all-new concept of providing a secondary air source. This additional air source regulates the air pressure of the intake airflow passing through the capsule. Aesthetics-wise, the previous model has been given a facelift. The Ninja V2 can best be described as “even more garang”. Clad fully in black, it is one of those few car performance products that put style into function. Now, it comes with an improved high temperature matt black coloured pressure hose for cold air intake. Bright orange tubes run from the engine to the capsule’s pressure regulator and from the capsule to the far end of engine bay. The whole set-up looks simply fantastic!

APPLICATION
The design of the capsule creates different air pressure zones that compress air. This effectively increases the volume of cold airflow into the combustion chambers, so that more horsepower is then generated. Throttle response increases by 1.8 times and the car is more responsive. Be it manual or auto transmission cars, gear change is smoother. The 2nd air source in Ninja V2 acts as an air pressure regulator, maintaining higher air pressure during low RPM driving and lower air pressure when you step on the accelerator hard for a high RPM spin. With Ninja V2, there’s no need to sacrifice your car’s low-end torque. By achieving the right pressure during different RPM levels, it creates a “Power-On-Demand” effect and all-round efficiency. In addition, it lowers fuel consumption.

GREATER FILTRATION
Unlike conventional filters, Ninja V2 capsule filter uses thick open-cell reticulated foam to keep the air clean. The science behind it is similar to the classic water purification system that uses rocks and sands of varying sizes to eliminate impurities. Unclean air passes through the 2-inch thick open-cell foam, its reticulated cells causing the dust to move through the foam in different directions and paths, effectively trapping dust yet allowing air to pass through freely. This patented design in filtering technology effectively traps dust particles as small as 5 microns. This is much more effective in trapping dust as compared to one or two thin layers of filtering paper or stainless steel gauze used in conventional filters.

VERDICT

BROQUET FUEL CHARGER

Months ago my VIOS charged the ¼ mile quicker with the simple addition of Broquet’s Fuel Charger and I promised to report whether this power hike causes a corresponding increase in fuel consumption. After all, it is common knowledge that you need more fuel to make more power and I most definitely had more power!

Since my first Honda GL years ago, I have been very diligent with recording my fuel consumption. I find the benefits many fold. It gives me a good indication on the running condition of my car. If the consumption figures start to drop, there is a problem. For me it’s one of two, you see, when my work starts to pile up and deadlines loom, I tend to rush from place to place, I accelerate harder and the car responds by rapidly falling fuel gauge.

HABITS
The other symptom of higher fuel consumption is probably an impending car problem. So its either going to be me or my car off to the doctor to get our blood pressures checked! With my new VIOS things are no different, consistent recording of fuel used by my ride. Years of experimenting have showed me that there are a plethora of factors that can affect fuel consumption, like stress. Yes, the human factor, every time my parents use the car, chances are that that particular tank of gas will last me 5% less! I notice that driving habits play a big part, my parents continue accelerating hard even when the traffic light in front is red, only to step even harder on the brakes, closer to the light. Regular servicing and tyre pressure play an equally important role. With the modern tubeless tyres, a 5 psi drop in pressure looks pretty much the same but you are going to loose 8% in mileage.

THE TEST
Broquet, in theory is supposed to make the fuel burn better thus with less fuel, drive your car further. Armed with detailed fuel consumption records I tried my level best run the most objective fuel consumption test ever. It starts off with eliminating as many variables as possible which may cause inconsistency. The tyre pressure on my VIOS was checked with each petrol top up and I made sure that only 95 RON Octane was consumed. I was able to run 5 tanks of petrol after the installation of Broquet so I have tabulated 5 tanks prior to using it. From the table, I have omitted the 6th tank because it clearly shows that doing ¼ mile testing has a drastic effect, more by nearly 20%, on fuel consumption. The first 5 tanks turn in an average of 13.02km/litre. After Broquet was installed, the next 5 readings averaged 14.34km/litre. The difference, 1.32km more per liter of petrol, works out to about 10% improvement in fuel consumption. No bad considering that my VIOS is more zippy too!

VERDICT
20 years of driving, of being a car enthusiast, I have seen hundreds of products touting fuel savings and more power. Most don't have a sound theory behind their products, others just make a mockery of the industry. According to Jeremy Ong, the Technical Director of Broquet, Broquet has not only been in the Singapore market for over 10 years but also has thousands of corporate customers to their name. While I have seen many products come and go, Broquet has stayed the course. And with this set of impressive results, maybe there is hope for such products after all.
